When the time comes to take back your health and ditch the toxins from your beauty routine, it can be overwhelming figuring out where to start. Today, I am sharing my tips on how to switch to clean beauty and what products you should swap first.

Here are my top 5 products to switch clean first.
Switch #1: Toothpaste
When using your toothpaste, you have to think it is going in your mouth, and essentially, you end up swallowing some of it.
So what are some of the dangers in your toothpaste?
Let’s start with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). These ingredients added are to provide a foaming lather. However, they have been linked to causing canker sores, mouth ulcers, stomach issues, and even cancer.
Artificial color is also added and is linked to affect children with ADHD.
Carrageenan is a food additive that is linked to causing cancer as well as intestinal issues.
One more (oh, there are more) that we will discuss today is Fluoride. The FDA requires a warning label on the toothpaste that contains Fluoride. I hadn’t noticed before, have you? Why is this required? It causes permanent tooth discoloration, stomach ailments, acute toxicity, skin rashes, and impairment in glucose metabolism. Read more on that here.
Switch #2: Lipstick

60% of lipsticks contain lead. Lead is dangerous for pregnant women and children. It is a cause of neurodevelopmental problems in children and linked to miscarriages and infertility.
Some more common harmful ingredients you find in lipstick are listed below.
Parabens are used as a preservative but is a known cause of cancer and is an endocrine disruptor.
Retinyl Palmitate is a synthetic form of Vitamin A and a preservative. There is evidence shown that it’s linked to some cancers and reproductive problems. It is also one that you want to avoid if you are pregnant and going out in sunlight. UV rays break it down and produce toxic radicals that can damage DNA and cause genetic mutations.
BHT and BHA are preservatives that are linked to toxicity and cancer.
Switch #3: Sunscreen

This is one category that I touch on a lot, and it may be because I live in FL.
Sunscreens can be harmful to you, as well as the environment and aquatic life. I have another blog post solely on the dangers in our sunscreens that I will link to.
A few harmful ingredients in sunscreens are listed below.
Oxybenzone is extremely toxic. It is an endocrine disruptor, as well as a skin irritant.
Alcohol Denat is common to help lotions dry and absorb quickly. It is also very drying to your skin and cause skin irritations.
BHT, which we discussed above, is also dangerous to the environment and animals.

Switch #4: Lotion

With lotion being one of the first layers of a product you put on your body, it must be non-toxic. This includes body lotion as well as a face lotion.
I’m going to list a few of the harmful ingredients to avoid below.
DMDM Hydantoin is a preservative that is another name for formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is carcinogenic as well as it can cause headaches, joint pains, and skin allergies.
Mineral Oil puts a “plastic” like a barrier on the skin. This means it doesn’t allow the skin to release toxins and causes bacteria to form and, in return, causes acne.
Fragrance can contain many different undisclosed chemicals that don’t need to be named because of “trade secrets.” Which, in return, means you don’t know what you are putting on your body. Many synthetic fragrances cause allergies, asthma, and respiratory problems.
Switch #5: Deodorant

Most conventional deodorants shouldn’t even be on the market. Some harmful ingredients they contain are listed below.
Aluminum is one of the active ingredients, and it stores in fat cells and damaged nerve tissues. Aluminum is also linked to breast cancer.
Triclosan is another common ingredient that is a known hormone disruptor.
Diethanolamine (DEA) is linked to cancer.
Why do I choose to start with these 5?
When you are switching to a clean beauty routine, it can feel overwhelming to switch everything at once. I have chosen these 5 because they are on the first layer of everything you put on your body. The lotions, sunscreen, and deodorant are absorbed into your skin. The toothpaste and lipstick you end up swallowing.
