Are you washing your clothes in toxic chemicals? It’s time to upgrade to non-toxic laundry detergent. For instance, most people use conventional laundry detergent and don’t realize how toxic and harmful it is to your health and the environment.

I was shocked to find out how many ingredients we use in our everyday beauty products found in our laundry detergent.

Ingredients to avoid for non-toxic laundry detergent

I was shocked to find out how many ingredients we use in our everyday beauty products are also found in our laundry detergent.

Firsty, 1,4 Dioxane, which is a known carcinogenic. This ingredient is contamination that occurs in the manufacturing process. 1,4 Dioxane is present in Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). Besides being a carcinogen, it causes eye and nose irritation, kidney problems, and long term lung damage.

Secondly, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are known to cause skin irritations and allergies. Not only being contaminated with 1,4 Dioxane, but it  is contaminated with Nitro Samines, which are carcinogenic.

Thirdly, you want to avoid Phthalates. Phthalates are in all products containing fragrance. They are dangerous to your endocrine system and reproductive system and cause infant development issues.

Lastly, we are going to discuss is Bleach (sodium hypochlorite). I know there are some big fans out there for Bleach. However, it is highly toxic. Bleach can cause severe skin burns, eye damage, cancer, organ damage, and is extremely harmful if inhaled or ingested.

One of the biggest shockers to me is when I read that these harmful ingredients are known to stick to our clothing fibers, and when exposed to the sun and our sweat, they begin to breakdown. When they breakdown the harmful chemicals, get absorbed into our skin.

Is using non-toxic laundry detergent better for the environment?

I want you to remember that when you wash your clothes, the water then goes to a treatment facility that can get many chemicals out, but not all. Some of that water does end up in our rivers, lakes, and oceans. Talk about major pollution.

A few chemicals found in our laundry detergent are harmful to aquatic life and wildlife.

Nonylphenol Ethoxylate (NPE) is a surfactant commonly found in laundry and dish detergent. It is harmful to fish and wildlife.

Chemical Surfactants can cause deformities to fish and frogs.

Optical Brighteners keep the yellowish tones off our clothes that are hazardous to aquatic life and your health.

Many conventional laundry detergents are in plastic bottles. With many people not rinsing out their empty bottles, they become non-recyclable. Plastic accounts for 13% of waste in the US. Therefore, you can find 269,000 tons of plastic in the Ocean. That includes deep in the waters as well on the surface.

Our plastic pollution is a huge concern for our environment. There are many companies out there that are offering non-toxic laundry detergent as well as environmentally friendly packaging.

A few of my favorites are:

Dropps– This one is by far one of my absolute favorites! They come in pods that completely dissolve when in water. So they are plastic-free. Their cardboard box is also recyclable and compostable. Try them out here

Pure Haven– They are completely toxin-free with minimal packaging. Try them out here

Tru Earth– They offer a laundry strip. You rip off your strip, and it dissolves in the laundry giving an extreme clean. Their packaging is plastic-free and compostable cardboard sleeve. Try them here

So now it’s your turn. Ditch those harmful laundry detergents that aren’t even cleaning your clothes because they allow harmful chemicals on your skin and your environment.
